Normandy, France

O.K. so I'm biased. I've lived in Normandy, sold property there, studied Norman history, customs and lifestyle, heard the wartime tales, put my kids through school and studied French there. Indeed this site was born to publicise my book 'A Normandy Tapestry' (and of course, a prerequisite of a good trip is to take A Normandy Tapestry as your holiday read. Hem hem!). Normandy flag

History

Normandy was invaded by the Vikings in the tenth century - the name deriving from 'North man', which is rather more Anglo-Saxon than French.  They stole not only the land, but the language too: which was to have enormous influence on English. From way before that, until the storming ashore of the American, Canadian and British armies on the Norman beaches on June 6th 1944, the French Department has played a key role in French, British, European, American and world history.
