Paris: Eyewitness travel guides $17.50 (a 30% saving). 432 pages "I used this book everywhere for my two-week trip to Paris, and more than the other three guide books I bought. The reason this book is so useful is that it doesn't describe the sites in long wordy paragraphs like the others. It's the one book I carried around everywhere. It includes tons of pictures that allow you tell quickly if you're at the right location, even if there's no sign (or if the sign is in a strange language). The pictures and illustrations make all the difference, and the layout is easy to understand. The maps are also useful and clear." |

At a recent book club meeting, we all agreed that Ms Winkler's book provides the most unique and pleasurable guide to walking, or shopping in Paris." |

| Art | Matisse $70 (a 30% saving) 752 pages, 880 illustrations Rizzoli
is proud to bring back into print this classic book on Henri Matisse,
originally published in 1984. French critic Pierre Schneider's life work

success when first published, its first edition selling out in four weeks.
This bible on the artist has received the following praise:
"This
mammoth book will be read as long as people are interested in Matisse,
which is to say forever." -New York Times Book Review |
| World War 2 |
The longest day $11.20 ( a saving of 20%). 352 pages The first volume of what came to be known as Cornelius Ryan's World War II trilogy, (The Longest Day, The Last Battle, A Bridge Too Far) this 1959 best seller is considered by many critics and readers to be the classic account of D-Day, June 6, 1944. Taking its title from a quote by German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel - "Believe me, Lang, the first twenty-four hours of the invasion will be decisive...the fate of Germany depends on its outcome...for the Allies, as well as Germany, it will be the longest day." - Ryan's book deals with the Normandy landings. |

Decision in Normandy $12.98 I haven't read this one myself. The reviews suggest that it is controversial. |

| Food and wine |
Patricia Wells at home in Provence: recipes from her farmhouse in France $28 (a saving of 30%). 349 pages "Simple, intermediate French cooking. This cookbook is full of country food. Most of the flavors come from herbs and olive oil and the recipes call for very fresh ingredients, so they are fun right from the beginning. If you live near a farmer's market, these recipes will do justice to the produce there. The recipes are laid out well, with measurements given in both metric and imperial notation, and there are plenty of substitutions listed for the more obscure ingredients...." |

French wines: the essential guide to the wines & wine growing regions of France $13.30 (a saving of 30%). 240 pages "DK makes wonderful books -- always colorful, well written and made of heavy stock. This French Wine guide is no exception. Covering all of the wine growing regions of France, including the non-classified areas, this guide provides for some wonderful reading. It covers several of the better vinyards for each area, including a history of the vinyard. The photographs are of very good quality and quite beautiful. The descriptions of the vinyards are fun to read and give a good general history. This guide would make an excellent companion for a travel tour of France" |

Wines of the Rhone valley $28.00 ( a saving of 30%). Hardcover. 688 pages. "This is Parkers first book on Rhone - and what a result ! All areas of the Rhone are covered, some to a bigger detail than others but anyway, the outcome is great. Maybe a little more in-depth details on the smaller - or should I say lesser known - regions (which are the ones we mere mortals can afford !) would be nice but, knowing Parkers affection for Rhone, that'll probably (hopefully) come in the next edition. All-in-all, very recommendable.." |

| Bit of fun | Grandes horizantales $18.17 (a saving of 30%) "This is the first book written by Virginia Rounding, and it is a very impressive debut. She tells the story of four 19th century Parisian courtesans, but also manages to work in a fair bit of French history, covering roughly 1830-1871. She manages to weave together a seamless blend of the cultural and political, and also the comic and the serious." (Bruce Loveitt) |

Remembrance of things past: Marcel Proust $44.80 (a saving of 30%). boxed edition, 3 volumes "If you are like me and you like all things French, Marcel Proust's "Remembrance Of Things Past" is the zenith of French literature. Proust wrote about the relationship between characters and their experiences with memory. The entire novel is itself written memories, linked together by precise narrative and lush detail. Marcel Proust worked on this monumental epic in the late 19th century, and finished the work in the early 1920's. Think of all the events that shaped the emerging twentieth century. The Edwardian Era in England was ending, in France the Belle Epoque was ending, and World War I destroyed much of Europe. Proust wrote about the Belle Epoque, the decadent society and its morals, its stuffy and fastidious etiquette, its innocence and its corruption. Like those long novels we used to hate in English class "War and Peace" and anything by Dostovyesky, "Remembrance" is a challenging, overdone work of historic fiction. It's length, however, is worth reading because of its great themes." (Rachel Garrett) |
